Moving Forward
Emoji are changing the way we communicate. There are those that argue the emoji bring us to a simpler state that could “devolve our language” or that the “reliance on emoji may push us back towards the cave drawings we started with” (Goodman, 2019, p.364), however, the increased use of visuals in CMC is allowing for emotional clarity in text situations. It is also providing a communication tool to bridge between languages and varying degrees of language knowledge. Focus on developing visual literacy is becoming more crucial: “the ability to acquire visual literacy, including the use of emoji, becomes an increasingly important skill - not only for dedicated data scientists, but across virtually all the increasingly entwined domains of human knowledge” (Hulburt, 2018, p.18). Emoji will further transform and strengthen text understanding as long as it is taken as an opportunity to help support us and done so in an a manner that is rooted in inclusion and equality.
