Ms. Underwood

My name is Ms. Underwood and I am a recent graduate from the University of British Columbia Bachelor of Education program. Previous to entering the program, I had been working in community centres for the past ten years in child care programs and as a sports, science, and art instructor. I worked with children ages 3-13 years of age.
My teaching philosophy is built on the idea of a classroom being a community composed of unique individuals. For a more detailed understanding of my teaching philosophy please see "My Teacher Philosophy" which also outlines my goals as an educator and my pedagogical approach.
I love being active through sports, jogging, yoga, and hiking; I played fast-pitch softball from age 6-21. I love to travel and have visited 18 different countries and have also driven across Canada. I learned to play the piano at a young age and continue to enjoy playing. I am an avid baker, gardener, and “DIY-er”. I also have a pet dog named Shadow.
Helping children to grow in all areas of development (social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional) is a privilege that comes with teaching; I feel very lucky to be part of the education profession.

My Journey to Becoming a Teahcer
When I was in elementary school, a friend and I used to play school where we would pretend to be teaching math. I didn't realize at the time but this was the first indication that I wanted to be a teacher.
At the age of 16, I started working with children as a volunteer for Summer Daycamp Programs. After my first summer I knew that this field of work was something that I wanted to pursue further. I continued to work in child care for ten years and with each passing year I learned valuable skills and I also learned about myself. When I entered the BEd program at UBC I knew I had made the right decision; I could see in myself the passion that I had for this profession and the joy that it brings me.
I feel very fortunate to be able to work in a field that is so rewarding. I know that I will continue to grow and develop as an educator and look forward to all the experiences to come.
